Adamızda Tepeköy Çınaraltı diye bilinen mevkinin eteklerinde bulunan manastıra bozuk yoluna rağmen (bazı katılımcılar araçla, bazıları yürüyerek) yoğun katılım vardı. Gündüzden kesilen kurban etleri kazanlara konulmuş pişmeye başlamıştı. Önce akşam ayini gerçekleştirildi. Gece ayinine başlamadan önce birlikte yemekler yenilerek şarkılar söylendi. Bazı katılımcıların ayrılmasına rağmen gece ayini de gerçekleştirilerek ritüel tamamlandı.

Vesper and vigils took place in one of the monasteries named “Saint Dimitrios” at the countryside of Agridia Village (Tepeköy) the night before (October 25th). Despite the  rough path (some participants came by car, some others  on foot), there was intense participation to the monastery. The traditional feast was not missing. During the Vesper, meat that has been blessed and sacrificed earlier this morning was cooked and the traditional Kurkuta (broken wheat porridge cooked in goat broath) was served to believers and visitors, after Vesper and before the Virgil accompanied by music and songs.

“Saint Dimitrios was born in 260 in  Roman Thessaloniki to a wealthy family. He received his primary education from his family. When he reached a young age, he wanted to serve his hometown as a soldier. Since he was a believer, intelligent and brave person, he reached the position of commander in a short time.

Dioklitianos, who was the basic enemy of the Christians at that time, was the Roman Emperor and the Anatolian chief was his son-in-law Maksimianos. When Maximianos saw the characteristics of Dimitrius, he appointed him as Duke to Thessaloniki, not knowing that he was a Christian. Reaching such a position, He fearlessly taught Christianity to his soldiers and told them that idols were fake. Many soldiers went next to him and many people were Christianized.

Δημήτριε, γιατί δεν ήρθες στο ναό;

One day, a few of the pagans went to Maximianus to report that Dimitrius spoke out against idols and spread the teaching that the one and true God is Jesus Christ. Maksimianos invited all his senior commanders to worship at the temple to make sure of this rumor. Seeing that Dimitrius refused to come to the temple, he ordered to bring him to trial.

Dimitrios, why didn’t you come to the temple?

Sir, I never went out of your orders and I never underestimated your size. But I am more faithful to Jesus Christ because He is the savior of me and all humanity. And that is why I refused to worship your gods.

Maximian was angry at these words and ordered the saint to be locked in a dark room. Since that room was located under a bath, there was a uncomfortable odour  and dirty water everywhere. When they threw Dimitrius into the room, the tried to attack him by leaving a scorpion nest. After the saint made his cross sign, he stepped on it and killed the scorpion. At that time the Angel of God appeared to him and gave him a golden Crown saying:

-Dimitrios be brave, you will defeat your enemies.

Thereupon, the saint realized that he would defeat the devil. That’s why he was in jail thank God and joyfully praying.

Με ποια ξόρκια κατάφερες να νικήσεις το ανίκητο Λυαίο;

Dimitrios, the martyr of God, spent about a year in prison. During this time, his students came to visit the saint, and he was teaching them.

In 291, a fights were organised in Thessaloniki. Apart from Maksimianos, there was also Dioklitianos in the arena. Gladiator was Lieos a very powerful and gigantic person. He had not yet been defeated by anyone, nor had he spared the lives of those who fought him. When this warrior came to the stadium, he was cursing the Christians and inviting them to fight him. When Nestoras, one of the Dimitrius’ students, heard these words, he went to Dimitrius, to as for blessing to defeat  this gigantic man.

Go, dear brother. You will defeat your enemy, but you will also be a Martyr in the name of Jesus Christ, Dimitriıs said

Nestoras joyfully returned to the stadium. He took a sword and went out to fight. When the people saw the young Christian, they made fun of him and laughed. Lieos told the youngster:

You can’t beat me and you’re too young to die.

You will die and I will beat you!

On these words, Lieos agreed to fight Nestoras.

Dimitrios’ student, after doing the sign of the cross:

Dimitrios’ God, please help me! he cried out.

As he grabbed his sword, he attacked, with one hit, he knocked the giant man down and killed him. The whole arena fell silent. A 20-year-old youngster who had never fought in his life had killed the beloved hero of the pagans. Thereupon, the emperor called the young man:

With what spells did you manage to defeat the invincible Lieos?

He was not beaten by spells. I was conquered by the power of Jesus Christ, the true God!” Nestoras replied.

Enraged by the incident, the king ordered Nestor to be killed with the sword that Lieos was killed. Thus, as Dimitrius said, Nestor was martyred in the name of Jesus Christ. Church celebrates his name on 27 October.

Saint Dimitrios was looking forward to the moment when he would shed his blood in the name of Jesus Christ. The emperor was very angry when he perceived Nestoras’ victory as a victory of Christianity against idols. That’s why he ordered Dimitrios to be killed as well. When the soldiers went to prison, Dimitrius lifted his right arm and waited for them to sword him. With the death of his body, he would have win the eternal kingdom of God. The soldiers killed him with their swords blows on the side of his belly.

The Christians buried Dimitrios’ body where he died. But since then, a magnificent scent began to emanate from his tomb and a wonderfully smelling water began to flow. The once dirty place smells amazing, no one could understand what this event was. In the church where the body of the Saint Dimitrius is located until today, the whole place smells wonderful on the day of the saint’s feast and people are blessed with this water. Many people find cure for their illness. St Dimitrius is  celebrated by our church on October 26th. Saint Dimitrios is the guardian of the city of Thessaloniki. ”

Risking death for faith is a sacred act for all beliefs. Our ancestors said that those who act against their beliefs for their small interests cannot proceed. How true.

Adamızda büyüyüp Patrik’lik mertebesine ulaşan BARTHOLOMEOS ve beraberinde bulunan konuklarımız ADAMIZA HOŞ GELDİNİZ.
